76 Meetup Groups match “Intellectual Discussion” near Wood Ridge, NJ
Meetup details are available only to members.
We’re a discussion group with a focus on rationality, philosophy, science, technology, skepticism and ethics. We choose members who are friendly, intellectually curious, intelligent, non-religious, and rationally-minded – meaning that we’re more interested in figuring out the truth together than in proving ourselves right, or in arguing for the sake of arguing. Our members are young, almost all in the range of 20 to 35 years old. Our meetings are usually informal group discussions at someone’s a …
The group meets the last Wednesday of every month to discuss New Yorker essays and short stories. The PLUS is a pre-meeting, separate discussion of a book ( fiction or non-fiction ) chosen in advance by the group. A member may participate in The New Yorker meeting without joining the book discussion. All essays, short stories, and books are chosen at each meeting by the group. In some cases the group may decided to devote multiple sessions to a book.

I'd love book clubs if it wasn't for the reading. This club is about reading captivating articles of modest length, and then chatting about them over a drink. Articles can be about whatever we want: corruption, religion, Jesse Ventura, high school popularity, etc. We meet in Manhattan, usually in Union Square, the East Village or LES.

Meet other local fans of author Ayn Rand and her philosophy Objectivism—a philosophy of Reason, Purpose, and Self-Esteem that holds human life on this Earth as the standard of all values and your life as an end in itself instead of a means to the ends of others. You are invited, if you are a rational person who: values reason, integrity, independence, and productive work; holds that no one may initiate the use of force against others and a proper government is necessary to secure it; deals with …
The Enlightenment is one of the most important periods in the history of thought. It gave birth not only to deists and freethinkers, but also to democratic ideals and the scientific method. Come join a small group of men and women who meet once every month or so in Manhattan to discuss books and other media that relate broadly to themes of intellectual liberation and social progress. In addition to books, we'll read shorter works like essays, speeches, anthologies split up into two or more sessi …

Immodest Proposals is a monthly discussion group for people fascinated by fringe ideas. Discussions center around an outlandish social idea made possible by modern technology and society. For example, past discussions have ranged from defining alternative culture for the 21st century to deciding how much government is too much. Immodest Proposals is also a group for the appreciation of good wine, beer, and food. We select venues with affordable, sustainable options and then arrange for our m …

So here's the deal: Let's get together once/month over food or drinks to discuss a work by a Nobel Prize Winner. The books will tend to be thought-provoking, so we should have some pretty engaging and passionate discussions. You don't need to be an English major -- just open-minded, friendly, and willing to get dirty with some heavy-duty literature. This is a new MeetUp, so I'll definitely be open to suggestions regarding the best way to organize our meet ups. Here's what the current plan is: Ea …

Think Drown at La Marina in Washington Heights. Or The Tiger's Wife at KGB Bar in the East Village. The Museum of Innocence at ilili in the Flatiron District. Or even Blood Meridian at Honk …
Ever since I was done with my art history degree, I've been missing the intense and insightful reading schedule I endured as a student. True, I still try to catch up with new publications, but I know I miss out a lot. So, I thought that doing it as a group may bring more motivation as well as enhance the understanding of serious writings about art through a stimulating discussion. If you share my interests in art history and criticism - do join. I see this as monthly book club/discussion group m …

This Meetup works like a book club, but our topics of discussion will be clips from TED (www.ted.com), Ideas Worth Spreading. During each Meetup, we'll watch a 20 minute TED talk and then spend an hour in a spirited discussion about the ideas presented in the talk. Sorry to disappoint, but this is NOT a live presentation by the presenter in the TED video!
Meetup details are available only to members.

This meetup is for people who are enthusiastic about capitalism as a system. Libertarians, market-oriented Democrats, Republicans, and Independents are welcome. This is not a Tea-Party meetup. We do not support "starve the beast" as a political strategy, and feel that should significant tax cuts come, they should be after we have been running a budget surplus for years, sufficient to pay down the national debt to less than 70% of GDP. Tax increases should not be off the table. This meetup is abo …

This group will meet periodically as interesting events (museum exhibits, literary events, music, film, theater, etc) come up. The idea for this group is that participants will meet before the event, at a nearby cafe or diner, to get to know each other and then attend the event together. Occasionally, we may also go out afterward for coffee or a drink to have fun and discuss our ideas. RSVPs may be limited for some events. There will be a nominal charge (nonrefundable) for each event, primarily …
